An interesting story about how Internet firms are waking up and kickstarting their lobbying efforts in Washington DC. They risk being dwarfed by the lobbying might of telecom and cable companies, so some Internet companies have started hiring lobbyists, making political contributions and trying to persuade lawmakers to craft rules for the Internet that will favor their businesses.
The effort comes from necessity. Congress’s hands-off-the-Internet approach, which has benefited Google, Yahoo and other Internet companies, is under strain as some telephone companies consider charging them for guaranteed fast delivery of Internet content.
