Couple of heavy-hitter funding rounds for two digital media related companies, one on the broadband content side and other on the enabler side.
Heavy.com: Om reports that the NYC-based broadband content/video site Heavy.com is about to get as much as $10 million in funding. Among the funders: Polaris Ventures. And Avram Miller, former VP of Intel and current CEO of the Avram Miller Company, will join Heavy’s board.
The site, after being in the boondocks (relatively-speaking) for some years, has come into its own in the last year or so, as broadband took off and the company made some smart moves into advertising-funded content and moving into portable video on iPods and PSP.
– Sling Media: The remote-access company Sling Media which allows people to watch their home-stored digital media remotely, is about to receive a big round of funding, reports SiliconBeat. The funding will be used to help finance the distribution of its product…prior to this the San Mateo, CA-based company has raised about $15 million. Om adds that is it not necessarily venture funding, but strategic, “from big boys of telecom, media and entertainment business”.
