Power Players in Mobile Gaming

NPD Group has a bulletin about mobile games, specifically what companies which wish to be successful should do. One interesting item of note is the way people find out about games.

There’s nothing too surprising here — the most common way people find games is via there carriers menu so games have to hit the top few slots to get a great deal of attention. However a significant number of people check with their friends and family to find games, and of those that intend to buy games this method of discovery is beaten only by the carriers website. Personally, I’d check out the game developers websites — there’s usually more information there. The advice from NPD is for companies to advertise mobile games in their packaging — so games for other platforms will advertise the mobile version of the game and so on.
There’s also a suggestion — which I wholeheartedly endorse — that companies connect the gaming experience on all platforms.
“The final key for greater growth is to build multi-platform connected gaming communities that include mobile, console, handheld and the PC. These communities should provide gamers with a single destination to find information on games, maintain user profiles, upload high scores, and to play against other gamers. Publishers can drive gamers to these communities by leveraging their packaging and marketing programs.”
There’s a number of these initiatives underway, but as a whole there’s still a long way to go…
