Opera has officially launched its Java-based mobile browser Opera Mini… it was originally announced back in August, but that was only in certain European countries (mostly Scandinavian but Germany got added in November). Late December it was made available to all, but Opera warned that the service could get taken down. Nevertheless, a reported one million mobile phone users have already signed on for the service.
The main point behind Opera Mini is that the web pages are compressed on a server before they’re sent to the phone, which reduces bandwidth use and increases speed.
The Register has a story about Opera Mini on PDA’s.
