: Work in progress. A medical emergency involving a delegate — all will be well, we’re assured — pushed back Michael Grade’s keynote considerably, likely cutting the audience for what is an entertaining and informative session with the chairman of the BBC. Grade started by noting his sense of fear in the air as he returns to NATPE for the first time in 10 years.
– “I am as sure as I can be that on demand is the future. … On demand is coming and it will change everything. … All the technology needed for on demand already exists.”
– “The rights issues will have to grappled with at the very start of the process, not somewhere down the line.”
– Grade says content and creativity continue to be primary but technology must have a seat at the table.
– Grade criticized the current practive of matching tech formats to device, strongly urging standards in technology. “Isn’t it time the industry agreed on common technical standards? … Recent history tells us this is madness. We mustn’t allow it to become a major hurdle kin the on-demand revolution. … The current situation is a gift to the opirtacte pirates.” If all content isn’t available on all devices “the pirates will soon do it for them. It will be Napster all over again.”
Sitting down for q-and-a led by ITV’s Paul Jackson, Grade shows a glimpse of bright red socks, setting off some audience whispers. This is a man who’s not afraid to have a strong personality and it comes through in every way, in charming fashion, of course.
