Sex.com Sold For Around $12 Million; To Launch Adult Social Network

So this chapter is closed too: Sex.com, the domain name, has been sold for about $12 million in cash and stock, says this story. A group of anonymous buyers, Boston-based Escom LLC, said in a statement it had acquired the domain from Gary Kremen, CEO of Grant Media and the founder of Match.com. The new owners plans to turn the site into an adult social networking and destination site.

Release: Financing for the
acquisition was provided in part by Domain Capital, a financer of domain names.

The sale ranks as one of the most expensive Web domain name transfers ever and outpaces the $7.5 million paid for Business.com in 1999 at the peak of the dotcom boom.

A history of the domain and its ownership by Kremen is in this RedHerring story.
