Warner Music has reportedly hinted it will launch a new kind of mobile music product: the SMS tone. As the name implies, this is a tone intended to be played when the recipient receives an SMS. It’s possible to set ringtones to play when you receive an SMS but these would be created especially for SMS and will “comprise music and video”. I assume they’d be shorter than a ringtone, but I don’t think there’s a specific market for them.
“Warner is a zealous convert to mobile, having seen the part played by the medium in the success of Madonna’s Hung Up single. The song’s ringtone was released a month before Hung Up was released to radio stations. Warner believes this tactic was instrumental in making the single number one in 29 countries.”
