This will get some heads scratching in the industry, and some people saying “stick-to-what-you-do-best-and-sell-against-that”. SeattlePI, the website of Seattle Post Intelligencer newspaper, is doing away with its dayparting experiment. The newspaper site was one of the first to adopt it in 2004…here’s a description of what it did with dayparting for the last couple of years. Basically, different homepages and content emphasis for different times of the day…four times a day.
Some hard lessons learned: “We can’t be all things to all people all the time. People might want to play games or shop or read celebrity gossip, but they weren’t coming to our site for that.” So the site homepage will focus on news, and news blogs by its reporters.
“We’ll still change the content mix on the home page constantly, but we won’t be changing the overall design or user experience anymore.”
