Mobile phone ringtones group Monstermob has agreed to buy M Dream, a Chinese developer of games for mobile phones, for $30m-$35m with an initial payment of $16m, predominantly in new shares. Monstermob said Chinese mobile game sales were expected to grow from $41 million in 2005 to $241 million over the next three years, making it the fastest growing segment of mobile content in the country.
M Dream, which delivers content via China Mobile’s “Treasure Box” games portal, has around 250 game titles and creates 15 new mobile games a month. That’s very impressive, but I doubt very many of them make any money. That being said, that’s true for the mobile game market as a whole — only a handful of games make any money, and most game developers rely on one or two games for the majority of their income.
“M Dream reached profitability in the fourth quarter last year and reported earnings of $500,000 and sales of $1.9m.”
