Crazy Frog Scapegoat Finds Solace In Porn

Don’t worry, Crazy Frog hasn’t gone pornographic…the article is about mBlox (of the Crazy Frog fine) making the move into adult content. El Reg starts off by claiming that everyone knows all the mobile content money is in porn, which most people who look at the stats believe that is a load of old cobblers. Adult content is not “leading the way” in terms of mobile technology, nor does it bring in the most revenue and nor is it likely to.
However, the executive chairman of mBlox had this to say: “The porn industry, Bud said, is more likely to keep its customers because its suppliers treat them well. It is not tarnished by the scams that tempt the purveyors of mainstream mobile content into abusing their customers.”
UPDATE: Andrew Bud, chairman of mBlox, has contacted me to clarify the above statement. This is a cut&paste from his e-mail. “That’s the Reg’s spin. What I actually said was that the incidence in the adult industry of customer dissatisfaction resulting from poor commercial transparency appeared to be low, perhaps due to their appreciation of the lifetime value of loyal clients. That’s a useful lesson for the conventional mobile content industry.”

El Reg is a little more blunt: “It is, perhaps, more likely that those mobile firms that don’t peddle smut have to resort to swizzling their customers because that’s the only way they’ll make any money.”
It is true that revenues in a lot of UK mobile content companies have gone down now that the knowledge of the “stop” command is widespread, and it is possibly because those companies became complacent over their subscriber base and ignored the fact that a significant portion of their subscribers didn’t really use the service. I don’t agree that all the mobile money is in porn, but I do agree that mobile content purveyors do need to pay more attention to what their customers want.
