The Associated Press seeks a Hosted Online Product Manager for its headquarters in New York City.
The Hosted Online Product Manager serves as business manager of AP’s Hosted Custom News and a suite of related online services, primarily for U.S. newspapers, but also potentially serving some international and commercial markets as they develop. This manager holds P&L responsibility for hosted products, including revenue growth from exiting and new products, general and niche markets. This manager develops growth strategies for both fee- and ad-supported hosted services and oversees implementation. This person proposes and develops new products and approaches that capitalize on premium editorial content, new technology and advertising opportunities. This person analyzes market needs and helps AP member newspapers improve their use of hosted services to drive and retain greater traffic and create advertising value. In the coming year, the hosted online product manager will lead efforts to rebuild Hosted Custom News in a modular framework to allow more flexible use and expand the markets and revenue potential for this service. This will entail working closely with the News department on editorial improvements, with our Services & Technology department to migrate hosted services to a new platform, with Product Development to explore new uses for the services, and with AP Digital, our commercial multimedia department, on a daily basis. This person works with AP bureau chiefs to help members derive full value from hosted services. As needed, this person manages vendor relationships and advertising agency relationships. This person manages budget, revenue share payments and works with Digital to manage metrics tracking and advertising. In addition to Hosted Custom News, this manager will take a lead role in managing online products such as the ASAP young reader service, Hosted MegaSports, and others as assigned.
The position requires an entrepreneurial approach, an interest in capitalizing on new technology to develop new multimedia markets, and a dedication to exemplary customer service. Candidates should have demonstrated ability to develop Web products that serve a range of market needs, and a strong interest in helping newspapers transition and thrive online. Business knowledge of newspaper online Web sites and the economics of search and online advertising are required. While this is a business management position, editorial experience also is an important asset. Technical understanding of web site construction and coding is a must. This position requires strong organization and communication skills to work with numerous AP departments and bureau chiefs across the U.S.
