3 Australia has launched a subscription-based $3 per month digital music download service. The service is in partnership with destra Media, which runs MP3.com.au, and will give 3 customers access to the entire MP3.com.au catalogue — including 100,000 tracks of independent music. The tracks will be converted into the mobile standard (mpg4) on 3’s mobile network.
Destra had previously signed a deal with Sony BMG to sell full-track songs to mobiles, but this agreement with 3 seems a lot better as it covers the whole online catalogue (which covers 1.3 million tracks)…Clarification from MP3.com.au confirms that this deal only covers the independent artists. $3 is a lot less than any other subscription service I’ve heard of. hopefully it’s good exposure for the artists…
