Volantis Protects New Mobile Software With Patent

Volantis has released a suite of new software for mobile content publishing and has obtained a patent in the hopes of protecting it. The patent (granted in the UK, some European countries and Singapore so far) “protects core aspects of the adaptation process, by which the Multi-Channel Server transforms authored materials into forms tailored for each device”. A major part of mobile content publishing is adapting the content for each individual device, and Volantis has a database of 450 attributes of more than 2,100 devices…the software recognizes each device and optimizes the content for it in real time.
That’s the bit that’s patented and it really underlies the rest of the Volantis software which covers the aspects of selling and distributing mobile content: For example, the Mobile Content Storefront contains tools to manage, sell and promote a wide variety of mobile content – including wallpapers, ringtones, audio and video, streaming content, games, MMS, and interactive content such as quizzes, polls, and competitions…none of which is particularly useful unless it works on a large number of handsets.
