The Napster Layoffs/Sale Chatter; Loudeye’s Options

I’m hearing some chatter around the industry recently that online music service Napster may be in for some major internal restructuring and a possible sale. Someone told me that RealNetworks might be interested in the company…someone else told me it could be Microsoft/MSN.

Meanwhile, Napster has officially denied any such moves, in this Register story: One Napster insider said the claims sound like “idle New Year speculation… all the plans I know of for Napster in 2006 relate to new products and expansion”.

Another digital music-related company Loudeye might have an earlier exit…it had recently hired an investment bank to look at possibilities, and some speculation that MSN, Nokia or even Samsung might be a buyer (the latter two based on Loudeye’s work in mobile music sector).

In any case, we’re on the case…
