EU Commissioner: China Must Play Fair With Mobile Content

Viviane Reding, European Union Commissioner for Information Society and Media, has claimed that China’s governmental support of its mobile industry is hurting European companies…
“To date, Chinese authorities have issued about 16,000 licenses that allow companies to sell telecom value-added services to consumers, such as mobile phone games and ringtones. However, only four of those licenses were issued to non-Chinese firms, Reding said.”
The pressure is increasing on China with the anticipated roll-out of 3G networks which will create a much larger market for mobile content, although Reding points out that if China wants the networks to be ready by the 2008 Olympic games it hasn’t got any more time to wait before issuing licenses and beginning the roll-out process.
