Fineline Holdings has signed licensing agreements for its cartoons with “three major mobile phone companies” on three continents; Australia, US and Europe. The total amount of potential customers is 300 million, with one company — Mobile Data Group — serving 200 million customers in Australia, most of the Pacific Rim and Africa (although Africa wasn’t mentioned as one of the continents Fineline supplies to).
Fineline has an interesting concept, which is to basically create reasonably generic cartoons and then license them off to telcos and other mobile content companies. For example, Moodies are little blobby humanoids intended to represent 10 emotions, Solar Sisters are 12 “stylish and sassy girls” based on the zodiac. They don’t seem to offer cartoon strips such as Garfield or the Far Side, but rather cartoon characters which can be used for whatever purpose…even sports teams. I think this sort of generic licensing would only work on mobiles…
