Google Acquires Canadian Mobile Software Startup

This one came out pretty late after the actual event: Google bought out a Canadian mobile content startup Reqwireless last summer. The Waterloo, Ont-based startup makes mobile browser and e-mail software, although the small wireless company’s products are no longer available for purchase.

Essentially, it is an acq-hire…Google bought the company for the engineers, in keeping with past acquisition habits by Google. Google is also actively looking to hire software engineers and developers in the city that has become a hotbed for software development and wireless technology in Canada.

Techfinance.ca: According to regulatory filings, Google paid approxiamtely $22.5 million (net of cash acquired) for acquisitions including Reqwireless, Akwan Information Technologies of Brazil, and Android Inc., a software provider for mobile devices.

Founded in 2001, Reqwireless develops business/productivity applications and development libraries for the mobile Java (J2ME) platform. It develops web and e-mail viewers for a wide range of wireless devices. Its products include WebViewer, EmailViewer, GotMailViewer, and HotViewer.
