Sprint Nextel’s mega-deals with the top cable companies will see the first fruits of its joint venture by mid this year, the companies announced at CES. The companies also announced John Garcia as the venture’s new president.
Sprint recently announced the venture with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox and Advance/Newhouse Communications to help them compete with regional telephone rivals such as Verizon and AT&T with quadruple play services.
Garcia expects the new outfit’s first offerings to include a common voicemail for wireless and cable telephone services, the ability for subscribers to look at their cable Internet e-mail on their cellphone and to have free calls between their cellphone and home phone if they use cable telephone services.
The venture also hopes to kick off with some VOD services and an mobile phone interface that resembles the browsing screen of a living room TV.
Kansas Business Journal: Sprint Nextel COO Len Lauer, Consumer Solutions President Tim Kelly and Senior Vice President Oliver Valente will sit on a six-member governance council that Garcia will report to. Executives from Comcast, Time Warner and Cox will occupy the other three seats. Sprint Nextel spokesman Nick Sweers said Wednesday that the joint venture will have about 50 employees but that it hasn’t been determined where they will be based.
