[Staci D. Kramer] Bernie Gershon spent a few minutes after his Mobile Entertainment session Wednesday giving us a quick update on ABCNews.com’s various forays into portable video, including the recently announced iTunes video additions. A few months ago he was showing off ABC News on the nifty black Sony PSP; now he carries a sleek, white video iPod. (The PSP has the more stunning screen; the iPod is easier to pop in a pocket.) Some excerpts:
iTunes: “We think it’s part of an overall smart strategy to distribute content to multiple platforms, distribute content in a way where we know our partners are going to market the content aggressively and also to devices that are either easy to use or smart or have long-term consumer value.”
Business models: ABC News insisted on being paid for its video from the beginning but has shifted gears as ad-supported video took off. The ABC News video podcasts on iTunes are free. “The evolution is more looking at multiple revenue streams than saying there is one revenue stream that will be the one that will play out over the coursre of time. We’re certainly looking at advertising-supported, subscription, PPV and anything else that comes along.” DVDs are part of the mix; a DVD of Barbara Walters’ latest two-hour special is selling better than expected.
