Updated below: So we’ve heard from a well-placed source that the companies will announce it at this CES later. Internet VOD firm Akimbo, which has been trying to make the natural progression of moving out of the hardware business and focus on content/service, is tying up with online movie service Movielink, and will deliver the TV, short-form and now Hollywood content through a hardware partnership with RCA, the source said.
Updated: The official details are out now: Akimbo and Thomson have partnered to design and manufacture a new co-branded Akimbo Player, and Movielink will provide the Hollywood/movie content. The player will launch early spring this year.
The new RCA Akimbo Player is priced at $199 with rebate…Its Ethernet and dual USB ports will provide consumer options for peripherals and home networking connectivity, such as through the use of wireless 802.11g adapters. The hard disk drive will allow Akimbo subscribers to store up to 150 hours of content.
