The Web Producer will work closely with program staff for broadcast to lead the production of all online initiatives for American Public Media’s Weekend America radio show in Los Angeles, and will work in a hands-on capacity to help maintain and continuously expand the Weekend American web site (http://www.weekendamerica.org).
Together with the show’s Senior Producer, the Web Producer will be responsible for the editorial and creative vision for the Weekend America Web site. This person will independently generate original content ideas, prepare images and stories for the Web, and collaborate with editorial staff in order to closely integrate online and offline content creation. The position demands excellent writing, editing, interface design, and web production skills. The ideal candidate is an experienced web producer with a background in journalism and online news production, who can create custom news sites and sophisticated interactive multimedia features using standard web production and animation tools.
The position requires daily site maintenance, audio encoding, and frequent HTML updates in a deadline-driven environment, as well as a flexible work schedule accommodating national news cycles.
Position Responsibility:
Editorial Responsibilities and Original Content Creation
– Participate in the Weekend America production process as a full member of the program editorial team.
– Work with show producers, editors and hosts to identify online opportunities that compliment or augment the broadcast. Independently develop concepts and create original online content for program Web site.
– Combine audio and visuals to create engaging and information-rich online features, consistent with New Media’s design and technological standards.
– Edit radio copy for Weekend America’s online environment.
Manage Processes and Resources
– Identify workflow efficiencies in the newsroom production cycle that support regular web content updates in sustainable ways.
– Manage and create multi-media resources (e.g., write HTML, encode audio, create graphics, etc.), track costs and copyrights.
– Collaborate with reporters, producers, contributors and interns to acquire fresh content for use on the Web. Develop standards for visual, audio, and video assets to be used on the Weekend America Web site. Coach radio journalists on these standards in order to acquire assets that vividly compliment the broadcast.
Creative and Technical Leadership
– Create engaging, stand-alone multimedia features using state-of-the-art graphic design and scripting tools (Photoshop, Flash, Actionscript).
– Develop, produce and deliver weekly e-mail newsletter.
– Work with broadcast staff to facilitate the production, publication, and promotion of podcasts.
– Follow high standards of accuracy, production quality and timeliness.
– Participate in marketing plans related to the web sites.
– Create monthly reports and analysis on web site and streaming usage.
– Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Required Education and Experience:
– Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
– Experience building and maintaining media or consumer-oriented Web sites.
– Demonstrated professional experience in journalism with an interest and aptitude for radio journalism.
– Graphic design experience from site-wide redesigns to production art.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
– Expert in standard web production tools such as HomeSite and Photoshop.
– Solid Web design sensibility.
– Ability to write HTML and CSS to support new and current pages, check work for HTML accuracy and browser compatibility. Ability to hand-code HTML.
– Ability to code sophisticated multimedia content using animation tools such as Flash and Actionscript.
– Support streaming live and archived audio and video. Scan images and prepares for Web use.
– Passion for excellence, and enthusiasm for a challenge. A self-starter who willingly takes direction when required.
– Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential component of the job.
– “Weekend America” requires work on Saturdays. Sunday and Monday are off-days.
– Understanding and acceptance of the fact that running a national broadcast web site will require work during national holidays as assigned.
– Proficiency with hand-coded HTML and related mark-up and scripting tools.
– Adept at working with a wide range of software tools.
– Flexibility, ability to respond to changing priorities.
– Ability to handle tight deadlines and quick turnaround.
– Proven knowledge, understanding and ability to assist with the production of national network quality news programs.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
– Professional experience with an online content provider preferred.
– Experience with Interwoven TeamSite a plus.
– Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML editors such as HomeSite preferred.
– Experience with working with streaming media, especially audio.
– Experience with content management systems-TeamSite in particular.
– Understanding and ability to apply Web design and usability principles.
