American Public Media, On-line Editor, Los Angeles, CA

This position is the editor for Marketplace.org, a news site which combines daily financial news from Marketplace, Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace Money and news wire services along with personal finance calculators and market index information. The Editor will work closely with the Senior Producer of each program to remain consistent with Marketplace’s distinctive character, and will provide direction to the Associate Morning Editor, Online. The position involves staying abreast of business news; developing story ideas for the site; editing radio scripts as needed for online presentation; and working with other editors and program producers to coordinate and enrich Marketplace’s web presence.

Position Responsibility:

– Editorial oversight of Marketplace.org in conjunction with Senior Producer of each program

–Development and guidance of newsroom projects that have specific online components

–Work with the APM New Media Manager to develop the APM Web site(s), by contributing ideas to the larger APM Web team.

–Manage the development, editing and production of online news content, including but not limited to: newscasts, feature stories that have been edited and adapted for online presentation from radio scripts, netcasts, slideshows, tools and daily newsletters, etc.

–Assist with hands-on domain level site development, site maintenance and updating of the Marketplace Web site using standard web production tools, including HTML and image editing software such as HomeSite, Imageready, and Photoshop

–Make difficult editorial and logistical decisions quickly about the content on Marketplace’s site(s) as changing events dictate.
Teach and coach radio journalists to help them develop fluency in producing content for the Web when capacity or opportunity allows.

–Motivate and engage radio journalists to produce and contribute content for use on the Web in full cooperation with Senior Producers of each program.

–Work closely with APM broadcast departments and programs to share information and to exploit joint production opportunities.

–Follow Internet developments, keeping the content of the Marketplace Web site(s) at the highest professional standard.

–Create monthly reports and analysis on web site and streaming usage.

–Oversee production and delivery of weekday e-mail newsletter.

–Work with broadcast staff to facilitate the production, publication, and promotion of podcasts.

–Provide work direction to Associate Online Editor.

Required Education and Experience:

–Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. Master’s degree in Journalism is preferred.

–5 to 7 years experience in broadcast or print journalism (e.g. news gathering, writing and editing), with recent experience in editing content for the Web.

–Experience developing, structuring, and maintaining content for large-scale, content-heavy, information-rich Web site(s).

–Fluency with standard web production tools such as HTML and Photoshop.

–Experience working with the Internet and enthusiasm for its potential as a medium for the delivery of news.

–Experience in planning and managing ambitious web projects in a fast-paced news environment, coordinating with the efforts of broadcast staff and developers, and tracking long-term project timelines and deliverables while maintaining an ambitious daily update cycle.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

–Proven editorial judgment with a commitment to accuracy, fairness and balance.

–Demonstrated understanding of news-gathering and editing for selected, discriminating audiences.

–Flair and imagination to craft original multi-media material and have, or be willing to acquire, the ability to conceive, build and maintain multi-media news service(s).

–Able to work well and productively in an environment where news is constantly changing and being updated and have the temperament to enjoy the process.

–Knowledge of computer and other high-tech industries.

–Demonstrated visual and aural awareness, and technical aptitudes to exploit the potential of multi-media personal computers.

–Ability to prioritize work and make resource decisions in a fast paced news environment.

–Excellent coaching, communication and teamwork skills.

–Commitment to public service journalism

–Understanding of and commitment to quality management and continuous improvement

–Familiarity with and appreciation of public radio

–Knowledge of the Law and its application to a news service on the Internet

–Ability to work across a range of skills and in a flexible manner, carrying out responsibilities in accordance with APM’s mission, values and professional standards

–Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential component of the job

–Understanding and acceptance of the fact that running a national business news portal may require work during early mornings, weekends, and national holidays

Preferred Skills and Experience:

–Hands-on experience with advanced multimedia programs and techniques, such as Flash animation and streaming video.

–Familiarity with encoding and streaming audio in a variety of formats.
