American Public Media: Associate Morning Editor, Online, Los Angeles, CA

This position is the associate editor for Marketplace.org, a business news site which combines daily financial news from Marketplace, Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace Money and news wire services along with personal finance calculators and market index information.

The Associate Morning Editor, Online will work closely with the Online Editor, the APM New Media team, and program staff to produce all online initiatives for Minnesota Public Radio’s Marketplace Productions in Los Angeles. Candidate will work in a hands-on capacity to help build and maintain the combined site for Marketplace, Marketplace Morning Report and Marketplace Money (www.marketplace.org).

Position Responsibility:

– Participate in Marketplace as a full member of the program editorial teams.

– Work with the online editor, show producers, broadcast editors and hosts to identify online opportunities that compliment or augment the broadcast.

– Perform early morning updates to Marketplace and Marketplace Morning Report web pages between 3 AM and noon daily.

– Create original online content for program Web sites using standard Web production tools such as HTML and Photoshop.

– Identify ways to streamline the production process to support frequent web updates.

– Edit radio scripts for online presentation as needed.

– Responsible for high standards of accuracy, production quality and timeliness.

– Identify and report production problems and assist with solutions.

– Create Web sites consistent with the program’s design, editorial and technological standards.

– Manage and create multi-media resources (e.g. encode audio, photography, graphics, etc.), acquire materials, track costs and copyrights.

– Work with content providers to manage flow of content.

– Produce and deliver weekday e-mail newsletter.

– Participate in marketing plans related to the web sites.

– Checks work for HTML accuracy and browser compatibility.

– Work with broadcast staff to facilitate the production, publication, and promotion of podcasts.

– Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Education and Experience:

– Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required, journalism degree preferred.

– 2 to 3 yrs demonstrated professional experience in journalism.

– 2 to 3 yrs professional experience designing content-heavy, information-rich Web sites.

– Prior work experience with an online content provider. Knowledge, understanding and ability to assist with the production of national network quality news programs.

– Proven experience writing and editing news copy.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

– Interest and aptitude for business journalism.

– Solid Web design sensibility.

– Fluent with standard web production tools (Homesite, Imageready, Photoshop). Able to hand-code and edit tags and content in established Web-authoring tools. Strong skills in the use of Photoshop or other image-authoring tools for Web production.

– Experience producing, encoding, and streaming audio for the web.

– Ability to work under heavy deadline pressure.

– Passion for excellence, and enthusiasm for a challenge.

– A self-starter who willingly takes direction when required.

– Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential component of the job.

– Understanding and acceptance of the fact that running a national business news portal may require work during weekends and national holidays.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

– Experience with Flash and ActionScript, proven ability to acquire knowledge of new Web production tools as needed.
