Some speculation following a Banc of America Securities analyst report today on Digital Multimedia Broadcasting and Qualcomm’s efforts in it (through MediaFlo). BofA report singled out XM Satellite Radio as one of the latest players to enter the arena where Qualcomm, Crown Castle and others are already entrenched.
XM’s role in DMB is through its ownership of 10 mHz of spectrum in the 2.3 gHz band; spectrum XM bought from Wireless Communications Service (WCS) in 2005. Speculation is that XM is looking for a partner “to help launch mobile data/video services using the spectrum…Some suspect that XM could use DMB technology in the WCS band.”
