Business Standard: New Year really choked the telecom networks as millions of messages flew around wishing people. There are some initial numbers to this SMS madness. Reliance Infocomm has recorded over 45 million outgoing messages on the New Year day and around 30 million on December 31, the largest number of SMSes sent from any network.
The number is also the largest on the CDMA major’s network during its three years of existence and majority of the subscribers had used the company’s recently launched SMS top-up card.
In comparison, Idea Cellular had 12 million SMSes (from its eight circles) and eight million for Airtel in Mumbai and New Delhi alone. Airtel’s all-India figures are not immediately available. The number of SMSs sent from other networks were also not provided, with most of the operators stating that it would take a couple of days to collate them.
