As Mobile Content Speaks The Local Language

Mauj Telecom has launched three mobile games in eight Indian languages: Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Urdu. This sort of thing is sure to get bigger, and will be helped by “open access” policies of telcos. There’s already a number of projects to translate computer programs into indigenous languages (normally using Linux) which is hindered mainly by the small number of computers in the communities the service is targeted towards (at least, here in Mexico). The penetration of mobile phones is already pretty high, and as Rafat has pointed out there isn’t really a “mobile divide”. There’s likely to be a strong market for information services in local languages, and a smaller on for entertainment.
