Business Standard: Gujarat, a large and rich state in western India, is going to see convergence technology – providing internet, voice, video and as TV channel on a single cable – very soon. A clutch of telcos like Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), Bharti’s Touchtel, Reliance Infocomm and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) all are expected to offer voice, data and video through a single cable. In Gujarat, Touchtel and VSNL have already started working on the technology on a testing basis.
“Gujarat, as a market is very odd – in the first and the second month, the growth or sale of the product is a extremely low, however, the third month witnesses a tremendous uplift only in Gujarat,” said an official of Touchtel Mumbai.
It expected a similar trend in its to-be-launched product. “We can not give the specific date or time as this will be a big surprise for every one,” said the spokesperson of VSNL.
VSNL has lined up expansion plans in Ahmedabad. It will compete against Airtel, BSNL, Reliance and local internet service providers (ISPs) in the city’s retail broadband market. “Not only VSNL but all big players are entering into retail broadband connections with voice and video,” he said. He said companies were expected to set up retail outlets initially for broadband connections.
