There has been surprisingly little about Amp’d around the place, possibly because the ‘soft launch’ means there wasn’t a lot of quotes from execs and so on — most news sites are running with the MTV or CBS news as filler. Red Herring has done a pretty good piece though, including the basics of the Amp’d service, the competition from Disney’s ESPN service, the growing market for mobile content and the huge wads of cash that are needed to set up an MVNO.
The comments on our site (and a few others around the place) have pointed out that it’s difficult or impossible to order a phone using Amp’d’s site — because of all the Flash. I certainly couldn’t get through to actually placing an order but I assumed it was because I use Opera — apparently not. I have to admit, the site looks great — it’s flashy, the images are well used to support the information and make it clearer, but since the site doesn’t perform its main task it’s an abject failure. Take a hint guys — have an HTML alternative.
