Google has made a version of Gmail that is easily accessed on mobile phones, currently only in the US. The help center for the service is here, and the URL for the service from a phone is http://m.gmail.com (which is at least as easy as having a .mobi address).
The handsets need to have an internet browser to use the service, which makes sense. It also allows people to view image, MS Word and PDF attachments, and also reply to an email with a phone call (if the number is entered in the contacts).
