A Network Live-DirecTV deal makes particular sense when you consider that NL partner XM recently began distributing dozens of music channels via the satellite operator. The joint venture between XM, AOL and AEG will be the music and live entertainment programming partner for DirecTV while DIRECTV will serve as Network Live’s exclusive first-window television partner. That means viewers will have a choice between AOL’s online video and a TV experience.
A sneak preview of the John Mayer Trio in concert will air this month but the official launch is scheduled for March 2006 in standard and HD.
Network Live will program two live music series — one with live performances by multi-platinum artists performing in major venues around the world; the other with “groundbreaking” artists performing in clubs and the like. The programmer also will deliver comedy and special event programming. Network Live’s programs will be available at no extra charge to subscribers of DirecTV Total Choice or DirecTV Seleccion. (That includes my household.)
It’s the kind of differentiator DirecTV is looking for and replaces the current mishmash of concert programming; being part of the multi-platform promotion surrounding Network Live’s events also could be a boost. Press release.
