Mobileplay: Ad-Supported Mobile P2P

Mobileplay has launched support for Windows Mobile/Pocket PC devices as well as Blackberrys for its content delivery service, which is an ad-supported peer-to-peer service for free content. Well, it is provided from a central database but users can then send the content to their friends as the solution includes targeted delivery, tracking and reporting.
“Mobileplay delivers news, weather, stock updates, sports scores, blogs, casual games, trivia, movie times, travel information and a variety of other content, all of it free to users. Among Mobileplay’s content partners are such major brands as About.com, Astrology.com, AP Digital, BusinessWeek Online, CinemaSource, Fodors, Gawker Media, Nerve.com, PC World, The Sporting News, USATODAY and The Weather Channel.”
Mobileplay claims its service sends content with “just 10 percent of the bandwidth and 30 percent of the memory footprint required by current content delivery methods” and advertisers “can tap into a burgeoning market of hard-to-reach mobile customers with non-intrusive, high-value, trackable, targeted advertising”.
This is a pretty good idea if they can pull it off… for people who want to pass content to their friends it’s better if they’re on an all-you-can-eat plan, of course. It brings the equivalent of e-mailing a newstory or a link to it to your friends online…
