Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications are among the cable companies opting for family tiers as a way to avoid the nuclear option: a la carte channel shopping. NCTA president and CEO Kyle McSlarrow told the U.S. Senate commerce comittee of the plans at a Monday follow-up to the Nov. 29 forum on decency; that was the hearing where FCC Chairman Kevin Martin testified that a new study showed a la carte progrtamming could help, not hurt, consumers. Yankee Group analyst Mike Goodwin told Dow Jones, the family tier is “a good alternative to a really bad idea. … The reality is that people don’t want them, there’s a vocal minority that is for family Christian values … but the majority of people either don’t care, can’t be bothered, or want the programming,”
