100 Mobile Startups

It’s boom-time for mobile content…capital investment is flowing into an increasing number of start-ups, many situated in Silicon Valley — just like the last tech boom.
“The growth of the mobile data industry is revving up Silicon Valley. Analysts and industry observers said 70 to 100 startups have surfaced in the Bay Area in the past few years, far outpacing any other region in the United States…Last year, venture capitalists invested $1.1 billion in wireless-related companies, including infrastructure firms, up from $877 million in 2003. And this year investors are expected to plow about $1.3 billion into wireless companies with slightly more than $1 out of every $2 one out of every two dollars ending up in the Bay Area.”
mFoundry co-founder Drew Sievers said why he decided on the Bay Area… “It’s less about where the (cell phone) carrier is. It’s about where are the best people and capital and open ideas to drive fresh mobile ideas.”
The general view is that the mobile market is still in first gear and has yet to really get going… (via Textually)
