Mobile Gallery For Emerging Artists

Example Of Start Art (Sas and Colin Christian)START SOMA, the San Francisco gallery for emerging artists, has launched StartMobile, which it claims makes it the first retail art gallery in the world to sell new art for mobile phones. It’s not the first to make art available for mobiles or even to commission new art for mobiles, but StartMobile will provide a good way for new artists to get exposure and a bit of cash. It’s also more than a gimmick (which is what a lot of the other “art for mobile” things seemed to be to me), it will sell thousands of original works of new art from hundreds of emerging and underground artists.
“My work has been shown in museums around the world,” observed photographer Ashkan Sahihi. “But I am more excited by the populist implications of StartMobile – this truly has the potential to make new art accessible to EVERYONE.” American Pop Artist Tim Gaskin echoes these sentiments: “StartMobile bypasses the elite gallery system, and uses technology to bring art directly to the people; much as Maxfield Parrish did a century ago using what was then the cutting-edge technology of mass reproduction. Plus, wouldn’t you rather have new art on your phone than another singing frog?”
