People who have been waiting breathlessly for the Chinese government to issue 3G licenses will soon be able to breath, if reports are to be believed. “The Chinese Ministry of Information Industry has announced plans to roll out 3G mobile phone services for digital TV early next year…Wang Bingke, the Deputy Director General of MII said: “The 3G and digital TV promotion campaigns will be launched in the first half of next year and they will add a lot of vitality to the industry.”
While the Chinese market could have supported the roll-out of 3G a while ago the Chinese Government has been holding off until the home-grown standard TD-SCDMA was ready. However, with the Olympics coming up in 2008 the licenses have to be deployed in the next 6 months if the government wants the networks to be ready…at least in the places where events are being held. TD-SCDMA handsets are expected to be commericalized early next year, and other companies are also gearing up for the deployment.
Research and Markets predicts that China will have 742 million mobile phone subscribers by 2010, including the 2G and 2.5G subscribers.
