SEGA Snags Game Rights For Beijing 2008 Olympics

Beijing 2008 Olympics LogoSega has snagged the videogames rights for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, including mobile games to be distributed in Asia.
“No firm details regarding the mobile phone games have been revealed to date, but SEGA has stated that the official videogame will contain elements of a wide variety of Olympic sports, including aquatics, archery, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoe/kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball, field hockey, Judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, table tennis, Taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.”
Often branded games have to be released to a strict time schedule which can result in poor quality and gameplay — while the Olympics has a strict schedule it is more than two years away so hopefully Sega can do something impressive.
Actually, there’s a lot they can do here in terms of mobile gaming if they give it a bit of thought. It doesn’t have to be one game — each sport can be a different game, and they can all be connected to a unified scoreboard. Sega could offer particular sportsmen to play (for a few cents extra) or players could follow a particular nation, or group with other players to form their own teams and compete against other teams. With a bit of imagination this could be really impressive…
