This is a major step in the world of online sports rights: CBS Corp. has tied up with NCAA to webcast most out-of-market games online…Beginning March 16, 2006, fans will be able to watch live broadcasts of the NCAA tournament from outside their viewing area via NCAAsports.com, the official NCAA website.
This ad-supported effort, called NCAA March Madness on Demand, will be promoted through various CBS properties, including during its TV coverage, on CBS SportsLine.com and on its recently acquired CSTV channels and CSTV.com.
The service will offer live and on demand streaming video of up to the first 56 NCAA Tournament games on an out-of-market basis, through the regional semi-finals (so will NOT include the final round after that, which sucks, but my IU Hoosiers team will not go past that in any case) , and also will feature streaming video of interviews and pre- and post-game press conferences, in addition to video highlights. Webcasts of games broadcast by CBS Sports in fans’ local markets will be subject to blackouts.
