Chamath Palihapitiya, the 29-year-old whiz kid who spearheaded the turnaround of AIM over the past year through last week’s launch of AIM Triton, is leaving Dulles for Silicon Valley. The WSJ reports Palihapitiya quit to join the Mayfield Fund as a principal early next year; he’ll help the VC firm better understand the youth market.
Hard not to see this as a significant loss for AOL; others may be able to continue his work at AIM but under the best of cirsumstances he should have been moving on to a new project at AOL. The Journal raises the issue of the uncertainty over AOL’s future, which could be a contributing factor as execs look ahead; still, Palihapitiya simply could be ready for a different kind of challenge.
