TiVo continue to try to prove it’s more than just a timeshifter and that it can survive without a continuing stream of new DirecTV subscribers now that the DBS operator is pimping its own DVR. TiVo subs with a Series2 unit on their home network will be able to access a suite of broadband services at no extra charge: photo slideshows/sharing with Yahoo! Photos; local weather and traffic from Yahoo; movie info and ticket buying from Fandango and internet radio via Live 365. There’s a new podcast feature, too.
CEO Tom Rogers explained the rationale to USA Today: “The core reason someone buys TiVo is to be sure there’s always something good on TV. It’s become clear, though, that people are also looking at TiVo as something more than a DVR, something that manages digital media in the home.” The sites offered via TiVo have been designed to limit the number of remote control clicks.
It’s not an automatic add-on and a note is already up warning people who join the priority list that it’s “first come, first serve” and “it may take up to a few weeks for your DVR to be enabled for Online Services”. TiVo needs to find a way to build on the momentum of announcements like this and TiVoToGo instead of encouraging interest and not being able to deliver instant gratification.
