Intel In Deal For Content To Its ViiV PCs

Intel has tied up with about 40 media companies for porting their content and servies to work with its “Viiv” technology-based digital home PCs. These PCs will come out in Q1 next year.

Companies such as French TV giant Canal Plus and BSkyB will provide desktop links that give consumers online access to their libraries of digital content. Japan’s (and our own Santa Monica-based) Bellrock Media, meanwhile, will release made-for-the-Internet content via a link on ViiV PCs.

The price, extent and complete offerings of these services will vary in different regions of the world, but all of the ViiV-branded PCs will come with links for at least one movie service, music service, online game service and photo service.

WSJ: With Viiv, Intel is trying to accelerate a flow of content in the other direction — adapting Internet-based services that were designed for PCs to be seen on TV sets and using logos to help consumers know what hardware and services work together.

Red Herring: The companies in Intel’s Viiv circle include Movielink, NEC, Sohu.com, VirginMega, Napster, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, The9, Metaboli, and muvee Technologies.

AP: TiVo plans to use the technology to make it simple not only to transfer from TiVo set-top box to a Viiv PC but also allow for the transfer of shows on the PC to a TiVo.
