Updated: read below: Craigslist founder Craig Newmark told an audience at Oxford University this week that he’s planning to launch a major online journalism project within three months “that will copy his ‘wisdom of the masses’ approach to advertising and apply it to journalism. From the Media Guardian article: “Mr Newmark would not reveal any specific projects, which will run separately from Craigslist, but implied that they would involve using web technology to let readers decide what the major news stories would be. ‘We have seen a genuine wisdom-of-crowds effect at work at times on our website,’ he said.”
This isn’t the first time Newmark has talked about applying Craigslist principles to journalism but it may be the most specific indication that he’s going through with it. Can he hit newspapers as hard with user journalism as he did with free classifieds? He starts with a strong base but enters an increasingly crowded field — and without first-mover status.
Newmark was just one of the SV participants in what sounds like an interesting event. Anyone have audio?
Updated: Craig says in the comments below that this is not his personal project or under Craigslist, but he is helping out in another project. He also writes about it on his blog.
