Mobile content provider Mobile Commerce has partnered with Multimap to launch a ‘Map to Mobile’ service, which lets users transfer maps to their mobile rather than having to print out a copy. It works via SMS — users need to send a message with the maps unique code and in return they get a message containing the URL of the map. “Texts are charged at the standard network rate and each map costs an additional 50p. Users can then view the map multiple times over a 15-day period, and zoom in/out to adjust their view.”
On the plus side, its using a system that users are assumedly familiar with, since it would be current customers of Multimap, so it’s a simple extension of their service. On the negative, it’s a fairly complex service and — more damningly — the maps have to be found on a computer rather than being searchable from mobile phones, in the unfortunate situation of becoming lost.
