MPEG LA is expecting an end to the running disagreement over licensing fees for DRM technology, which the mobile industry is complaining are too high. “The beginning of 2006, that’s what we’re expecting,” said Larry Horn, vice president of licensing at MPEG LA.
The latest offer from the rights group was in April — $0.65 per mobile phone and an annual $0.25 per service per subscriber, which is higher than the total current revenue from digital entertainment (there’s a lot of mobile phones). Horn said that the final agreement would closely resemble the April proposal…the carriers aren’t saying anything.
