Effective today, add Time Warner’s Cartoon Network and Viacom’s Nickelodeon to the on-demand download rolls. The two networks will provide half-hour episodes of shows including Nick’s “SpongeBob Squarepants” for $2.99 a pop exclusive to Habro’sportable video player for kids, VuGo. Steve Youngwood, SVP for Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products tells the WSJ part of the move is about extending brand, part is about the risks of digital media: “We know that most of our episodes, you could steal them. Here’s giving them [viewers] a legal alternative to do what we know they are doing.”
The VuGo, which retails for about $120, has room for two episodes or six hours of music but can be expanded with 2 gig SD cards. Think of it as training wheels.
