Updated to include Don Katz keynote: We couldn’t make it but iPodObserver was on the scene with detailed coverage of Friday’s three keynotes.
Jason Calacanis: The Weblogs Inc. victory tour continues … Calacanis asked how many people in the audience were making money podcasting and an estimated 5 percent raised their hands. Sounds like a pragmatic presentation; he talked about inadequate podcasting tools, the need for an automated, syndicated, audio-based network for supporting podcasts with advertising, and he talked about the difficulties of making money now that the big guys are in the mix. Bonus link: JD Lasica’s interview with Jason about 6 podcast business models.
Joe Hayashi, senior director or product management, Yahoo: He ses podcasting as the latest wave of social media and Yahoo’s beta podcasting tool as a way to make those connections easier. In the few weeks since the beta launched, Hayashi said the audience is more than 80 percent male, 30-44, with more women in the younger demos. People like listening from the PC or Mac with twice as many listening to it that way versus downloading to a device. Subscribers average 3 or more podcasts.
Leo Laporte, This Week in Tech: Laporte focused on the passion of podcasting but offered some stats from a fresh survey of listeners of the popular TWIT podcast: The dominant age groups are 25-34 (36 percent) and 35-44 (26 percent). Sixty-eight percent subscribe to the RSS feed; 96 percent say they have listened to 6 or more episodes; 95 percent say they have listened to every podcast; 97 percent are male; 79 percent are in the U.S> and the rest represent 43 other countries. The overall satisfaction is 8.95 out of 10.
Don Katz, Chairman and CEO, Audible: Matt Foster of Citizen Spin says the main message “was that for podcasting to take off, it needs to be easy, really easy.”
– More about the expo from Digital Podcast, including the tidbit that Laporter makes $10,000 a month from subs donating $2 a month.
– Colette Vogele covers the music panel: “Bottom Line: Just Use Podsafe Music.”
