Russian massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Sphere has moved to smartphones and Pocket PCs thanks to Nikita, 1C and Yandex. “The mobile client provides gamers with a broad range of features taken from the original version of the game. There are communications, trading with the original interface, and also free moving amongst each other in the trading place. The client connects to the game server of Sphere. Therefore users can see each other no matter which kind of device they use.” I think this could be the best way to put multiplayer games onto mobile handsets…there are some things that are best done on a computer, but there are others that can be reasonably done on a mobile phone. The press release says “Mobile Sphere for Pocket PC and Smart-phone is unique — there are no similar projects in the world of game development to date”. I haven’t heard of any, but if I’ve missed any let me know.
