Updated: Yahoo is going to launch a mobile phone with its broadband access partner SBC (owner of Cingular) by next year, reports WSJ. The SBC-Yahoo phone, which will be manufactured by Nokia, is expected to be available as soon as early next year and will cost $200 to $300. Operating on the Cingular network, the phone will also be an MP3 player, a 1.3 megapixel camera and will have a removable memory card.
This is pehaps a precursor to other online giants moving into the MVNO space as well, though I am not sure this is the best idea…and AOL phone, an MSN phone, a Google phone, a MySpace phone, and a Yahoo phone. Or, here’s a novel idea, how about all of the services on one phone? How about pushing to open up the phone and letting users decide?
Updated: On second thoughts, it seems that it will just be a branded phone on Cingular, rather than a whole new MVNO service.
