I’ve been traveling heavily over the last month or so, and picked up some stories and half-stories about LA, and what is shaping up to be the digital media hub (yes, I know, we’ve been through this phase before, but I do think this time it might turn out to be different):
– If you’re an online or mobile exec looking for a job, LA is the place to be now…Fox Interactive Media, Yahoo, Interactive Corp, and others are hiring like crazy.
– Google is thinking of taking up a bigger office in LA…someone told me the company was looking for a space opposite Yahoo’s offices in Santa Monica, the same space Fox looked at and realized it was too small for its needs.
– Execs and HR people at LA Times, VNU and Reed are worried that Yahoo is sucking out the talent from their companies, and it is very difficult to match the salaries and of course, general mojo.
– I wonder how long AOL will continue to base its HQs in Dulles…it is driving a lot of its entertainment initiatives out of its Beverly Hills LA offices, and I would not be surprised if the company officially announced something in the next year or so, especially if the rumored investment or buyout happens.
– And then, our Montana Avenue in Santa Monica: it is becoming the homebase for a lot of digital media execs I know of…I run into them periodically at Diedrich’s and Peets Coffee. I am half-thinking of forming a Montana Av. Digital Media Association…
