AOL Mobile, the mobile division of AOL, has seen a fair amount of mid-to-senior level layoffs over the last few weeks. The Dulles-based group has been moved, for all intent and purposes, to Seattle, and as the company announced in August, the new group is called “AOL Wireless”. A company spokesperson confirmed that Seattle is now the “hub” of all AOL mobile efforts, though he refused to say how many layoffs were done from the Dulles office.
I met a number of ex-AOL mobile execs/employees at our DC mixer last week, and have also received e-mails from some otwhers. But as the spokesperson emphasized, this is by no means a scaling back of AOL’s mobile efforts, but the opposite…Seattle is a big mobile city, and after the acquisition of Wildseed earlier this year, it makes sense to drive it out of there.
