India’s SMS Revolution

The Economic Times: SMSes are ruling Indian television. You can’t help it. When there are more mobile phones than cable and satellite homes.
It all started in a big way with Indian Idol (the Indian version of American Idol) viewers voting via SMS to choose their favourites – 60 million SMSes in all. And now Kaun Banega Crorepati-2 (the copy of Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire) and Indian Idol 2 have taken it to a new level.
“SMS is a medium which is very powerful and has caught on across all age groups due to its ease of use and SMS is only expected to grow as telecom companies look at this medium to increase their ARPU’s (average revenue per unit),” says Tarun Katiyal, Business Head, Sony Entertainment Television.
In another story in Rediff.com (Business Standard), SMS is shown as something that is revolutionising Indian banking. As of now it’s basic account balance services. But I would like to see higher banking transactions on mobile phone if they can sort out security issues.
